Teachers - Abaarso School of Science and Technology
Abaarso School of Science and Technology
Hargeisa, Somaliland
last year
Deadline Mar 31, 2023
The Abaarso Network includes three school systems in Somaliland (Somalia): a residential high school known as Abaarso School; Barwaaqo Women’s University, offering a four-year degree in education; and Kaabe Montessori primary schools.
Somaliland has been peaceful since it declared independence from Somalia in 1999. Crime is low. However, development and education have lagged. The Abaarso Network educates the next generation of Somali leaders, who will help develop their country after the devastating civil war. Since opening in 2009, Abaarso has sent nearly 200 students on scholarship to top colleges and secondary schools throughout the world, including Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Brown, MIT, Amherst, Swarthmore, and many more. The Abaarso School has been featured on 60 Minutes and in The New York Times, BBC World, and CNN Money, among many others.

Teachers in the Abaarso Network work hard, in difficult conditions. They work long hours, often in a boarding school environment. They also provide an extraordinary opportunity for children and young adults to access a world-class education in an otherwise impoverished, under-developed setting. Compensation packages include monthly stipends that varies based on experience and scope of work, room and board, round-trip airfare, travel health insurance and bonuses for those who stay beyond one year. Teacher-leaders receive additional stipends.
All staff fully immerse themselves in the school’s mission. They forge lifetime connections with grateful students. Abaarso School teachers gain invaluable classroom teaching experience and receive expert coaching to become better teachers. Barwaaqo Women’s University teachers have the opportunity to empower young Somali women to become professionals and drive development through their communities. Career development opportunities and additional incentives exist for those who spend more than one year with the Abaarso Network. Applications for subject teachers, with a priority on STEM, and teacher-leader roles are welcome. Experience teaching or working with youth is desirable, but not required.
