Our School

Abaarso School students became the first in their country in over 30 years to matriculate to US universities including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and UPenn. The school has been featured on 60 Minutes and in the New York Times, BBC, CNN, and more. Abaarso is an American-accredited school that has received funding support from USAID.

Our Context

Abaarso is located in Somaliland, the independent but unrecognized country in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland has had peaceful transfers of power in democratically elected governments since it declared independence from Somalia in 1999. However, poverty rates and unemployment rates are sky high while life expectancy and school attendance is low.

Teacher Responsibilities

Teachers at Abaarso work hard in difficult conditions. They provide an extraordinary opportunity for children and young adults to access a world-class education in an otherwise impoverished, under-developed setting. Teachers have 18-20 hours per week of classroom teaching with another 30+ hours of extra-curricular responsibilities including advising, office hours, clubs, sports, and administrative duties.

Compensation

Compensation packages include monthly stipends that varies based on experience and scope of work, room and board, round-trip airfare, travel health insurance and bonuses for those who stay beyond one year. Teacher-leaders receive additional stipends.
