Organizational Setting

The key mission of the FAO Representation in Somalia, which is led by FAO Representative (FAOR), is to assist and support the national government to develop policies, strategies and programme aimed at accelerating the Implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the area of FAO's global mandate and Strategic Objectives. More specifically, FAO's response aims to address national needs and priorities in achieving food security, reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing agricultural, fishery and forestry sectors, and ensuring the sustainable use of environmental and natural resources and respond to recurrent emergencies. The current portfolio of activities of the FAO Representation in Somalia includes a wide scope of technical support interventions ranging from policy support through livestock and crop production, to natural resource management, Nutrition, value chain, food security analysis and water and land information management. FAO is also implementing several emergency, resilience-building and development interventions, with the support of its five field offices and close to 400 staff in partnership with the Federal and State line ministries.

Reporting Lines

The position is under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Somalia, the direct supervision of the Head of Strategy and Resource Mobilization and in close collaboration with the Communications Specialist, the incumbent will design the guidelines, messages and other materials as required taking into account FAO's branding guidelines and the Somalia context.

Technical Focus

The Graphic Designer will provide support in creation and development of initial design concepts and work on layout illustration for FAO documents and products.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Create and develop initial design concepts and work on the layout/ artwork/ illustration for FAO documents and products:

  • Develop, adapt, review, and edit artworks, photos, charts, and other graphics in the document.

  • Ensure that all materials are produced in line with FAO graphic guidelines.

- Ensure proper use of FAO and donor/partner visibility logos and branding:

  • Handle all donor guideline and logo questions and managing the contents of the folders 1) Guidelines (donor document with brand requirements 2) Logos (for the hi-res logo options of the donor).

  • Ensure compliance with FAO branding guidelines across the programme.

  • Ensure compliance with donor/partner branding across the programme i.e., EU visibility.

- Create artwork and support procurement of visibility items:

  • Provide technical support to project teams procuring visibility items i.e., banners, documents, clothing, accessories, branding on FAO vehicles and boats.

  • Concept and design of artworks for visibility items for project teams and for staff use.

  • Supporting project teams by writing NFF documents, and technical approval of items delivered by suppliers.

- Support Social Media Campaigns:

  • Prepare SM cards, graphic design support for tweets, images, concept notes, agendas, profiles, invitations, zoom presentations, etc.

  • Ensure social media products meet FAO branding guidelines.

- Support the development and implementation of project visibility plans:

  • Support projects through the development of visibility plans and visibility requirements across the life of the project.

  • Support the communications subunit and project teams to plan, track and monitor visibility procurement.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree or relevant technical training/qualification in art, in graphic design, or other relevant discipline in a reputable institution.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in graphic design.

  • Working knowledge (level C) of the FAO official language used for communication within the country (English) and working knowledge of the local language(s) is required.

  • National of Somalia.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • In depth knowledge of Adobe CS platforms, specifically InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. Knowledge of Premiere or other video editing software could be an advantage.

  • Ability to create designs for the web and in CMS platforms, such as WordPress, Drupal, or other Content Management Systems.

  • Basic CSS and HTML capabilities.

  • Ability to create a campaign concept and translate it across different mediums/experiences.

  • Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms.

  • Attention to detail combined with the ability to work quickly to meet multiple deadlines.

  • Eagerness to acquire new knowledge on graphic design.

  • Ability to work within a team of professional staff from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds and expertise.

  • Experience working in the Horn of Africa, and in the Somalia context, will be considered as an advantage.

  • In depth knowledge of the MS Office suite of software.

  • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to customer service in creating visual concepts that meet the needs of the client and are effective with audiences.

  • Demonstrate strong theoretical and practical background in graphic design.

  • Show a clear and mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of a UN agency.

  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management.

  • Strong leadership and consensus building ability working in a complex, matrixed environment with different stakeholders to ensure the continual evolution of drafts toward a final product.
