Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is in the Mission Support Center (MSC) of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and is based in Mogadishu. The incumbent will report to the Chief, Somali Security Forces (SSF) Support Unit.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the Chief SSF Support Unit, the Logistics Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

Logistics

  • Identifies all routine, mandated logistics support to Somali Security Forces (SSF).
  • Prepares, implements, and controls appropriate methods to deliver logistics support to Somali Security Forces (SSF) and to cater to them, ensuring optimal utilization of available resources.
  • Provides logistical and operational support to Somali Security Forces in terms of life support commodities and services such as fuel and rations in coordination with the mission Life Support Section/unit.
  • Participates in generating an effective and efficient logistics planning and coordination for the Somali Security Forces.
  • Maintains, updates, and ensures accuracy and completeness of computer database recording requisition details, purchase orders, delivery, and invoice actions. This includes coordinating on delivery schedules, follow-up and receipt of Receiving and Inspection (R&I) Reports, verification of invoices against R&I reports, recording contract status at all stages of processes.
  • Prepares routine office correspondence. Supply/Transport/Movements
  • Coordinates transportation requirements to the Somali Security Forces (SSF), including staff movement for duty purposes and troop deployment/rotations.
  • Coordinates the provision of approved ad-hoc logistics support to the Somali Security Forces.
  • Conducts regular sector visits to assess life support delivered to the Somali Security Forces.
  • Conduct regular inspection of inventories of assets purchased through Trust Funds. Keep an accurate and updated database for SSF Inventories received through Trust Funds.
  • Register, raise cargo movement requests and movement of personnel request from SSF for approval. Provide relevant pre-boarding briefing to SSF passengers traveling on UN aircraft in accordance with UN rules and procedures.
  • Completes periodic reports and documentation regarding provision of logistics support to SSF.
  • Coordinates consumables and spare parts consumption rates and usage patterns.
  • Controls and manages supply related items requisitioning and delivery.
  • Records contract actions and monitors activity.

General

  • Familiarizes new staff with respect to work requirements and applicable UN guidelines and office procedures.
  • Maintains supporting files, database, and monitors reports.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate in logistics or transportation, asset management is desirable.

Job - Specific Qualification

A valid Driver's license, including the ability to operate a manual-transmission light vehicle in 4x4 conditions, is required.

Work Experience

At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience of practical logistics operations or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (3) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in large-scale transport fleet management is desirable. Experience in humanitarian activities in disaster management and responses is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. NOTE: ''Fluency'' equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''Knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

  • This position is temporarily available through 30 June 2025. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
